Four ways to get help with your taxes from the IRS

Each year, most Pennsylvania taxpayers must fill out and file their returns with the IRS. Unless you work with taxes for a living, it’s understandable to feel frustrated during tax time. Here are a few helpful ways to get the help you need from the IRS.

Call the IRS

If you need to contact the IRS, calling one of their toll-free telephone numbers is a great way to get started. Being such a large organization, there is a dedicated phone number for each of the most common tax categories. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to be available during the agency’s operating hours.

Visit the official IRS website

Another way to solve tax issues is by visiting the official IRS website. This website has in-depth explanations and answers to the most common tax questions. You can also see the status of your payments to the IRS.

Go to a local taxpayer assistance center

Sometimes, it’s better to take care of situations involving your taxes in person. Fortunately, depending on where you live, there should be a taxpayer assistance center (TAC) nearby. Before you start your trip, it’s smart to call ahead to your local TAC because some of these facilities are currently on an appointment-only basis.

Communicate through mail

While it’s not the quickest option, many people communicate with the IRS by mail. Most IRS letters leave an envelope and a return address. If you have urgent questions or concerns about your taxes, it’s probably best to avoid this communication method.

It is understandable to feel nervous about reaching out to the Internal Revenue Service. You might have to try a few contact methods, but the IRS should be able to provide you with the help that you need.
