How to prepare for a collaborative divorce process

On Behalf of | Oct 2, 2025 | Divorce

Divorce doesn’t always have to feel like a battle. A collaborative divorce offers a less combative path that’s more focused on solutions. Instead of leaving everything to a judge in divorce court, you and your spouse work alongside trained professionals to find common ground.

Still, preparation matters. Walking into the process unprepared can leave you feeling overwhelmed or even at a disadvantage.  Being prepared is essential for a smoother, less stressful and more effective process.

Get your financial information in order

Money issues are often the most contentious, even in collaborative divorce. Before the process begins, gather financial documents, such as tax returns, bank statements and investment account balances. Having a clear picture of your finances before things get going can ensure discussions are productive and based on facts.

Clarify your priorities

Think carefully about what matters most to you. Is it keeping the family home or preserving your retirement? Do you want the family business to keep running? Knowing what you want to achieve ahead of time helps you to stay focused during negotiations.

Be open to compromise

Collaborative divorce requires give-and-take from both sides. If you come determined to get everything your way, the process won’t work. Have an open mind and be willing to compromise. It doesn’t mean giving up what’s important. It’s about solutions that both of you can live with.

Choose the right professionals

Besides attorneys, you may also have to work with financial specialists or mental health professionals. Surrounding yourself with the right team can provide clarity, support and balance when unexpected issues arise. The proper guidance can help you make the most of this less adversarial way of settling a divorce while protecting your interests throughout the process.
